Indian police said suspected Maoist rebels have shot and killed at least 12 policemen.Police said the police were ambushed Monday while on patrol in the forests of the central state Chhattisgarh. Several others were wounded.The Maoists have not claimed responsibility for the attack.The rebels said they are fighting for the rights of the poor and landless. They are active in at least 13 of India's 29 states. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called the rebels the gravest threat to India's internal security.The decades-old Maoist insurgency has left thousands dead.
